Philosophy

Birthright believes it is the right of every woman to give birth and the right of every child to be born. We have over 500 centers providing caring, non-judgmental support to those facing an unexpected pregnancy. Birthright promotes responsible parenting and adoption. We help people find the resources and establish the support system needed to enable them to complete their pregnancies. Life is a precious gift.

History

Birthright began in Toronto, Canada in 1968 through the efforts of Louise Summerhill. Her heart was drawn to helping those facing unplanned pregnancies and her grassroots efforts started the world's first international pregnancy service. The organization quickly spread through Canada, the Unites States and other countries.

Birthright remains an independent, non-profit, non-political service organization. Its charter, followed by all Birthright centers worldwide, defines available services, ensures each client receives the same considerate treatment at every Birthright center and helps the office staff preserve Birthright's good reputation for the future.

Founder

Louis Summerhill

Louis Summerhill was an ordinary woman who did something extraordinary to help others. Born on May 25, 1916 in Scotland, Louis Smith and her family immigrated to Canada when she was a young girl. Later she married Stephen Summerhill. They were blessed with seven children through their years together.

In 1968 Louis's vision began materializing with a one-room office and $300 in the bank. Under her leadership, Birthright grew to be a highly respected international organization serving thousands of clients worldwide. Since her death in 1991, three of her daughters serve as co-presidents of Birthright.
