What to Expect when You're Expecting

Congratulations!

A mother-to-be experiences many physical and emotional changes during the nine months of her pregnancy. It's a time of excitement, sometimes anxiety, oftentimes wonderment, but most importantly, it's a time for your body to tend to the development of your baby, and a time for you to prepare emotionally and physically for the demands of raising a child. Buckle your seatbelt, life will never be the same again.

1st Trimester

This time is often referred to as the months of adjustment. A woman may experience feelings of elation, fear, joy, surprise or a host of other emotions as she contemplates the months ahead. Mood swings are to be expected. She may cry easily and go from extremes of emotional highs to irritability.

Many women feel fatigued and sleepy these first months. Some experience nausea (with or without vomiting), heartburn, indigestion or constipation. Breast changes include a fullness, tenderness and darkening of the area around the nipple. The veins in her abdomen, legs and breasts may become more pronounced as blood supplies to these areas increase. There is a need to urinate frequently since the growing uterus may be pressing against the bladder. She may have food cravings and an increased appetite. By the end of this first trimester her clothing may feel tight around her waist and bust.

2nd Trimester

This stage of pregnancy is sometimes referred to as the trimester of planning and acceptance. There are fewer mood swings as her metabolism improves and she usually feels good. Morning sickness may subside- giving her more energy and a better perspective on the pregnancy.

Some mothers-to-be experience backaches and lower abdominal achiness as the pregnancy progresses. Bluish streaks may appear on the breasts, hips or abdomen. There may be mild swelling of the ankles, feet, hands and/or face. A whitish vaginal discharge is common. Some women have problems with constipation and hemorrhoids. Varicose veins may appear in the legs. The abdomen may feel dry and itchy as the skin is stretched. Ear stuffiness and nasal congestion may occur. The breasts continue to enlarge. Most women feel the baby's movement during the fifth month.

3rd Trimester

This final stage is a time of excitement and wanting the pregnancy to be completed. Women may experience apprehension about labor and delivery and baby's health. It may be a period of irritability and oversensitivity along with a relief that the time is almost here.

By now there is strong fetal movement. There may be occasional headaches and dizziness. Some women experience difficulty in sleeping. Shortness of breath is common while the uterus crowds the lungs. Easier breathing returns after the baby drops into the pelvic cavity two to four weeks before delivery. It may be more difficult to get around. Some mothers-to-be feel clumsy and need to be extra careful to avoid falling. Random Braxton Hicks contractions may happen with the uterus hardening for a minute and then relaxing. The vaginal discharge becomes heavier with more mucus that may be streaked with blood. Breasts may leak colostrum. Labor and delivery are a short time away. Soon she will be able to hold the baby in her arms instead of under her heart.

Welcome, little one, to our world!
